Your mattress is an investment in your sleep and health, but it’s often overlooked when it comes to cleaning. Regular deep-cleaning and freshening can extend its life, improve air quality, and ensure a healthier sleeping environment.
Why clean your mattress regularly?
Over time, mattresses accumulate a surprising amount of dust mites, dead skin cells, sweat, and allergens. This buildup can trigger allergies, cause odors, and even impact the quality of your sleep. Regular cleaning helps:
- Reduce Allergens: Minimizes dust mites and other allergens that can cause respiratory issues.
- Eliminate Odors: Freshens your mattress by neutralizing sweat and other accumulated smells.
- Maintain Hygiene: Creates a cleaner, healthier sleeping surface.
- Extend Lifespan: Regular maintenance can help preserve the integrity of the mattress materials.

Supplies you’ll need
- Vacuum cleaner with upholstery attachment
- Laundry detergent (mild, liquid)
- White vinegar
- Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution)
- Baking soda
- Clean spray bottle
- Clean cloths or sponges (microfiber works great)
- Fan (optional, for drying)
- Sunlight (optional, for drying and deodorizing)

Step 1: Strip bedding and vacuum
- Strip Bedding: Remove all sheets, pillowcases, mattress protectors, and blankets. If possible, wash them in hot water while you clean the mattress.
- Vacuum: Using your vacuum cleaner’s upholstery attachment, thoroughly vacuum the entire surface of the mattress. Pay extra attention to seams, crevices, and quilted areas where dust and debris tend to accumulate. Go over the entire mattress slowly, ensuring you cover every inch.
Step 2: Spot-clean stains (vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, detergents)
Different types of stains might require different approaches. Always blot, don’t rub, to avoid spreading the stain or damaging the mattress fibers. Test any solution on an inconspicuous area first.
- General Stains (Sweat, Urine, Food):
- Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the stained area.
- Blot with a clean cloth.
- Alternatively, for tougher stains, mix a paste of baking soda and a few drops of water. Apply to the stain, let it sit for 30 minutes, then scrape off and vacuum.
- Blood Stains (fresh):
- Immediately blot with a clean cloth dampened with cold water. Never use hot water, as it can set blood stains.
- If the stain persists, apply a solution of hydrogen peroxide (3%) directly to the stain. It will fizz; blot away the foam with a clean cloth. Repeat as needed.
- Follow up with a mix of dish soap and water if necessary.
- Body Oils/Grease Stains:
- Lightly sprinkle baking soda over the stain to absorb the oil. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum.
- For remaining residue, mix a small amount of mild liquid laundry detergent with water to create suds. Apply only the suds to the stain, blot, and rinse with a clean, damp cloth.
Step 3: Deodorize with baking soda
This step is crucial for absorbing odors and moisture.
- Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda evenly over the entire surface of the mattress. Don’t be shy!
- Let the baking soda sit for at least several hours, preferably 8-24 hours. The longer, the better, as it will absorb odors and moisture.
- If possible, open windows to ventilate the room.
- After waiting, thoroughly vacuum up all the baking soda using your upholstery attachment.
Step 4: Sun & air dry
Sunlight is a natural disinfectant and powerful odor neutralizer.
- If possible, move your mattress outdoors into direct sunlight for a few hours. The UV rays will kill bacteria and dust mites and help further air out the mattress.
- If moving it outdoors isn’t an option, open all windows in the bedroom to create good airflow. Use a fan to circulate air directly over the mattress.
- Ensure the mattress is completely dry before putting sheets back on. Any residual moisture can lead to mildew.
Preventive maintenance: protectors & rotation
- Mattress Protector: Invest in a high-quality, waterproof mattress protector. This is your first line of defense against spills, sweat, and allergens. Wash it regularly.
- Rotation: Rotate your mattress (head to foot) every 3-6 months to ensure even wear and prevent body impressions. Some mattresses can also be flipped. Check your manufacturer’s recommendations.
When to consider professional cleaning or replacement?
- Professional Cleaning: Consider professional cleaning if your mattress has extensive or very old stains, persistent odors you can’t remove, or if you have severe allergies. Professionals use specialized equipment and solutions that can penetrate deeper.
- Replacement: Even with regular cleaning, mattresses don’t last forever. Most mattresses should be replaced every 7-10 years. Signs it’s time for a new one include:
- Sagging or visible indentations.
- Waking up with aches or pains.
- Increased allergy symptoms when in bed.
- Persistent odors that won’t go away.
